Abstract

There are noteworthy international convergences in recent guiding documents for infection control and other patient safety programs. Although these bode well for raising the future prominence of such programs, they also are an indictment of failed past leadership and an external prop. Local governance itself, and alternative bases for quality management systems, should be examined as closely as these new documents.
