Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the key characteristics of the perceptual capacities experts use to analyze events and make decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is a research review and summary.

Findings

The paper finds that the four keys to expert perception are: focus on events and factors most relevant to performance, draw inferences from observations, be attuned to the atypical, and critically analyze the events observed.

Practical implications

The paper identifies the steps necessary for analyzing events and making decisions like an expert.

Originality/value

The study offers cutting‐edge findings on a key characteristic necessary for developing expert performers.
