NACE International hosts conference on safety and reliability of pipelines in Mexico City

Article Type: Environment and safety From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 61, Issue 5

Pipeline operators, owners and corrosion engineers convened at NACE International’s Pipeline Integrity Management Seminar in Mexico City, Mexico, April 23-25, at the Mexico City Marriott Reforma Hotel. Attendees included PEMEX pipeline engineers, private pipeline operators, pipeline integrity engineers, risk consulting companies, compliance specialists, pipeline maintenance personnel and other pipeline industry stakeholders who examined strategies and best practices for implementing effective pipeline integrity management programs.

Pipeline integrity management (PIM) focuses on implementation of efficient and optimal preventative actions to detect and mitigate risk. When implemented, PIM results in increased safety, environmental protection, reliable service and maximum profit for logistics of transport and distribution of oil, gas and refined hydrocarbons. The NACE International PIM Seminar covered methods and tools for improving pipeline integrity and the benefits of implementing pipeline integrity management programs. The event also provided several networking opportunities. Keynote speakers included Dr Sergio Manuel Alcocer Martinez de Castro, Secretary General of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, President of the Mexican Society of Structural Engineering and Vice President of the Technical Committee of the National Office of Normalization and Certification of Construction and building; and Dr Harvey Hack, President of NACE International and Senior Advisory Engineer at Northrop-Grumman Corporation, Undersea Systems. Dr Alcocer presented on USA–Mexico Research and Development Collaboration in Energy Pipeline Transport of Oil and Gas, and Dr Hack presented on NACE International Goals in Standards, Training and Certification in Pipeline Integrity and Corrosion Control.
