Jotun launched new thin-film passive fire protection coating

Article Type: New materials and equipment From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 61, Issue 6

Jotun, operating in the global coatings market, announced the launch of Steelmaster 1,200 WF, a highly efficient intumescent coating providing up to 180 minutes protection against cellulosic fire for infrastructure buildings.

As the latest contribution to Jotun’s Steelmaster range, Steelmaster 1,200 WF is developed to meet the challenging demands for passive fire protection (PFP). Engineered to protect structural steel of public spaces, including airports, hotels, train stations, school buildings, stadiums and malls, this thin-film, water-borne product allows more surface area to be covered with less paint, thus reducing application time and cost.

According to Jotun’s Product Manager Barbara Logan, Steelmaster 1,200 WF represents a milestone for the company:

Our objective was to create a product that provides longer protection against fire for buildings such as airports, shopping malls, offices and warehouses, and help our customers save time and reduce both project costs and environmental impact, she says. Due to extensive development, testing and verification, Steelmaster 1,200 WF achieved excellent results with up to 180 minutes fire protection.

Steelmaster 1,200 WF completes Jotun’s range of PFP products, enabling the company to strengthen its position within thin-film PFP market. Logan notes that independent benchmark testing confirms that Steelmaster 1,200 WF offers the industry’s best fire protection for columns, beams and circular and rectangular hollows, worldwide.

Earlier this year, Steelmaster 1,200 WF passed all relevant tests and approvals by Certifire, an independent third-party certification scheme internationally recognised for ensuring the quality, performance, durability and traceability of fire protection products.

As a long-term member of the Association for Specialist Fire Protection, who represents and supports the activity of the fire industry in relation to all forms of “built-in” fire protection, Jotun has extensive experience in PFP coatings. Jotun is also active in the US Green Building Council, a non-profit organization committed to a sustainable future:

“Steelmaster 1,200 WF is developed to help improve environmental performance, consistent with Jotun’s GreenSteps programme, without compromising on quality or durability, she says. Project owners pay increasing attention to environmental aspects and compliance with international standards, such as LEED and REACH, to limit the use of harmful chemicals.

Logan notes that Steelmaster 1,200 WF does not include Hazardous Air Pollutants and has very low volatile organic compounds (VOC) helping owners comply with environmental standards without compromising on quality.

Steelmaster 1,200 WF product is also compatible with a range of Jotun primers and topcoats:

Our goal is not only to provide the market with superior individual products, but offer comprehensive solutions that not only ensure excellent fire protection, says Logan. We see ourselves partnering with customers to reduce projects costs and remain in compliance with increasingly strict environmental regulations and standards.
