Abstract

The basics of computer operations are explained in detail and the costs and benefits involved. However, in the context of libraries their applications can be justified only if the users of the library and information service and their informational needs warrant this. An organisational objective must be achieved through the computer, which would not have been gained without it. Otherwise computerisation in libraries would be difficult to justify.
