Abstract

Alludes to five leadership styles which are: the strategic approach — the traditional view of a CEO; the human assets approach — they believe strategy formulation is the job of those closest to the markets and the customers; the expertise approach — this identifies the core capabilities leading to success; the box approach — this points to the ‘control box’, procedural, financial and cultural in every company; the change approach — CEO's who concentrate less on where organizations are going, more on how to get there. Proposes that, with 160 CEO's interviewed worldwide, most focus on one or two of the above — the stakes are too high for CEO's not to have to focus on one approach.
