Six trainees from the charity East Durham Partnership have undertaken a 12-week placement with UK repair and maintenance providers, Kier.

The trainees, aged 19 to 25, gained experience in aspects of property maintenance, including training in asbestos awareness and employability skills. The trainees also shadowed Kier employees and helped to complete repairs to council-owned homes and buildings around East Durham.

Kier regional director Mike Furze said: “Kier is committed to helping young people to develop their careers in many different trades. The number of young people out of work in the north-east has increased and we need to invest in the future generation if we want to break the cycle of worklessness.

“We strive to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we work and are proud to be able to offer placement opportunities to local young people.”

East Durham Partnership chief executive Ellen Foxton commented: “We encourage all of our learners at the partnership to take part in on-the-job work placements during their time with us. It helps them to complete their qualifications and get ready for employment.”

East Durham Partnership is a local community project run by volunteers in an attempt to offer a range of training and support activities for disadvantaged residents of East Durham affected by the closure of the coal mines.
