Council cuts training costs by 80 percent

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 45, Issue 7

Northumberland County Council in the UK has revolutionized its approach to learning and development and reduced the cost of its training delivery by 80 percent in one year.

By implementing a tailored solution from Learning Pool, training costs have dropped from an average £20 per employee per hour, to £4. This means that the council can provide more training to staff. The savings have been achieved through a combination of using:

  • online training, with more than 10,000 hours of classroom delivery saved;

  • self-service for course bookings, with more than 1,200 hours of administration time saved; and

  • bespoke content creation, with more than 20 hours of content developed.

Implementation also included a talent-management system, Totara LMS, which helped to shift the culture of the council. Totara enables the team to engage with employees, meeting the challenge to secure the talent needed to do more with less – all with the added benefit of a highly motivated workforce.

The future development of 360-degree feedback will also provide employees with the ability to receive objective feedback on how their managers, peers and customers feel that they demonstrate the competencies set by the organization.
