Hazards – the UK’s leading process safety conference – is heading to Scotland next May and will address major offshore and onshore themes including shale gas technologies, human factors, safety culture and leadership

The event – called Hazards 24 and organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) – follows another disappointing few months for the process industries with almost 100 deaths and nearly 400 injuries reported worldwide in 2013.

Since 15 people died at the West Fertiliser Company plant in Texas on 17 April 2013, there have been seven major plant-based incidents in the USA, India, South Korea and China killing a further 45 people.

The incidents have occurred across a broad range of process industries including brewing, nuclear, steel, waste disposal, food, gas, drug manufacturing, explosives and waste water treatment.

With safety still a major concern in all the process industries Hazards 24, which is being held on 7-9 May 2014 at Scotland’s Edinburgh International Conference Centre, will provide an opportunity to share best practice, discuss past experiences and highlight the latest developments to minimise the risks.

The organisers have also announced a call for papers covering 18 themes including legislation, plant layout and environmental protection[1]. Abstracts should be submitted by 7 October 2013. This year, there is also the opportunity to host a workshop on day one of the event[2].

David Brown, Chief Executive of IChemE, said: “Process safety is an area where we must continually learn together and work together to manage the risks in the process industries. ” So far this year, there have been over 20 incidents which have resulted in fatalities and injuries. These statistics remain alarmingly high and unacceptable.

“Hazards 24 is hugely important event in the process safety calendar and an opportunity where we can all come together to learn the lessons and protect lives.”

The Hazards conference series has gone from strength-to-strength since it was first staged in the 1960s and now has sister events in Malaysia and Australia.

European Symposium of Photopolymer Science

The field of photopolymer science continues year after year to steadily advance fueled both by academic enthusiasm and by industrial pragmatism. The numerous environmental and economic benefits of light induced chemistry make these technologies popular for manufacturers and fabricators within a wide range of different industrial sectors.

The European Symposium of Photopolymer Science aims to bring together the brightest minds from both academia and industry to collectively present and discuss the fundamental issues within this still burgeoning field. The meeting consists of seminars from not just European but international leaders of photopolymer science with topics addressing critical issues such as photochemistry, reaction kinetics, analytical methods, photoinitiator and monomer synthesis, structure-property relations, polymer processing, as well as applications.

The first ESPS Meeting was held in Mulhouse, France in 2010 and the second meeting took place in Torino, Italy in September 2012. Looking to continue a tradition of excellence set by the two previous meetings, the Vienna University of Technology will host the Third Symposium to be held 9-12 September 2014.

It is the intention of the organizers to provide ample time for discussion to emphasize the workshop character and stimulate the exchange of new ideas. The program will be mainly based on invited talks given by respectable scientists working in the field of photopolymer science. In addition, other contributed papers with 15 min allotted for presentations as well as posters may be submitted.

Topics that will be discussed at the meeting include: (but are by no means limited to):

* radical and cationic UV-curing process;

* thiol-ene polymerisations;

* oxygen inhibition;

*polymerization kinetics;

* novel concepts;

* emerging applications;

* hydrogels; and

* biomaterials.

American Coatings Conference issues Call for Papers designing the future: innovative solutions for coatings

The American Coatings Association (ACA), in partnership with Vincentz Network (VN) is calling for papers to be presented at the American Coatings Conference 2014. This major technology forum for the coatings industry, which will take place 7-9 April 2014 in Atlanta, GA, is held in conjunction with the American Coatings Show, 8-10 April 2014.

Innovative companies, as well as academic/governmental research institutes, are kindly invited to submit abstracts detailing high-level technical contributions to this event, presenting their latest research results that highlight advancements important to coatings, as well as to printing inks, adhesives and sealants.

The conference organizers will select proposed presentations for the AC Conference based on the following criteria: scientific significance, novelty and potential value-added to the industry. Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to clearly state in their abstract the research’s unique contribution as it aligns with these criteria. Student papers are welcome.

The most outstanding coatings presentation will be honored with the American Coatings Award selected and sponsored by ACA and Vincentz Network. The recipient of this prestigious award will be endowed with $2,500 and an attractive sculpture.

Papers should be submitted online at: http://www.american-coatings-show.com/callforpapers by 27 September 2013
