This book is a tutorial containing a collection of papers divided into six chapters. A glossary and bibliography are also included. These papers were chosen by the author to cover a wide range of topics, rather than an in-depth study into one area of computer communications.

The two main aims of the tutorial are to present the motivating factors and design principles of a communications architecture and to present a broad overview of communications protocols.

Chapter 1 comprises seven papers that discuss different communications architectures. Five papers which address physical and data link protocols can be found in Chapter 2. The third chapter discusses network access protocols.

Inter networking is covered by four papers in Chapter 4, while Chapter 5 addresses transport and session protocols. Chapter 6 comprises seven papers and discusses presentation and application protocols. The final two chapters include the glossary and bibliography.

Overall, this is a well written tutorial, suitable for readers from a range of disciplines.
