The impact that friction stir welding (FSW) has had on the joining of aluminium has been truly outstanding. The 140 delegates to the 1st International Symposium held in California in June 1999 heard an impressive range of speakers cover the state-of-the-art at that time.
Since then, components incorporating friction stir welds have gone into space; the number of commercial applications has expanded; more companies have taken licences; and work has proceeded apace all round the world studying FSW of magnesium, steels, titanium and other materials.
Like its predecessor, the 2nd International Symposium devoted exclusively to FSW will be one of the premier events in 2000 for anyone interested in leading edge manufacturing technology.
The previous event attracted over 30 high quality papers from industrial organisations, research laboratories, and universities world wide. A similar response is expected this time, given the growth in FSW activity world wide. Topics covered include process developments, industrial applications, mechanical and metallurgical properties and process modelling.
The symposium, to be held at the Hotel 11 in Gothenburg, Sweden, will provide two days of intensive discussion in the company of many of the leading practitioners of FSW and will provide an unrivalled opportunity for delegates to access the very latest information possible.
