Telescopic linear actuator

Telescopic linear actuator

Keywords: Linear systems, Actuators

Linear actuators are found throughout industry but until now have been limited to “fixed” applications. Danaher Motion's team of design engineers were briefed to create a linear actuator which offered great flexibility. The result is the MovoZ Z2 – a new telescopic linear actuator unit that can be installed vertically, horizontally and upside down as a lifting column. This new space-saving actuator offers a number of features that enable it to deliver precise, smooth linear actuation making it suitable for a wide variety of automation and handling applications (Plate 8).

The accuracy of a linear actuator is largely a factor of rigidity. This is a particular engineering challenge when designing a telescopic actuator. As the MovoZ Z2 utilises extruded, anodized aluminium profiles in its design, optimum strength against bending and torsion is provided, as well as protection of the drive mechanism. The saddle moves easily and smoothly with a minimum of play along the profile and has a high side load capacity. The double-profile MovoZ Z2 is equipped with factory mounted adjustable end of stroke limit switches, a choice of three different ball screw leads, and is said to offer excellent durability as well as good chemical resistance and non- corrosiveness. In addition, the MovoZ Z2 unit accepts Type BGM40 belt gears allowing motors to be mounted parallel to the profile for a shorter overall length.

Key performance figures for the MovoZ Z2 add credence to the manufacturer's claim with repeatability ±0.1 mm to a resolution of 0.1 mm. The actuator is available in stroke lengths up to 1.5 m with a maximum length of 4 m, handling loads of up to 7,500 N and torque to 700 Nm.

The MovoZ Z2 is a cost-effective unit that offers maximum flexibility and easy installation. With a broad range of accessories, including mounting brackets, flanges, speed reducers, T-slot bolts, magnetic sensors and multi axis mounting kits, the need to design a complete solution for a specific need is fast and easy. Custom units are made to order and can be delivered to exact specifications regarding unit size, stroke, drive mechanism, as well as shaft configurations.
