Holding back
Graham RowlandsDepartment of English, Flinders University
I hold back. I've been holding backfor so long now I hardly know I'mholding back. My staff don't knowor, if they do, they don't knowexactly what I'm holding back. That's why they're staff, my staff. When my staff are no longer my staffit's not by choice, not theirs anyway. It's because they didn't hold back. They were how I used to be yap yapyapping about what he said to herabout him or she said to him about heror how there would soon be right here.I welcome there if there adds to herebut if there takes away from here(without, of course, ever intending to)then there must be held back forthe sake of here, for my sake. That's why I'd never hold backmorning tea, lunch or long weekendsfrom staff who mightn't always hold back.If they always held back, I'dhave nothing to hold back.
