Now available worldwide from Jotun Paints, "Futura AS" is a polyurethane topcoat which is said to be economically attractive without compromise on performance. Extended test trials in the Middle East have reportedly that, in the toughest of environments, this new Jotun coating claims excellent gloss and colour retention combined with a lasting protective performance.

Jotun informs us that these conclusions have been quantitatively confirmed by tests in which "Futura AS" was exposed to ultra-violet radiation for much more than 1,000 hours. The accompanying diagram compares the performance of the new Jotun formulation with those of typical alkyd and epoxy coatings similarly exposed.

With a solids content, by volume, of 47 per cent ±2 per cent, "Futura AS" has a recommended dry film thickness of 40 microns, which is typical for polyurethane topcoats. However, the Jotun formulation, claims a greatly improved flexibility in overpainting. For instance, its minimum repainting interval (3 hours at 23°C) is said to be less than half that of some other polyurethane coatings. This flexibility means that maintenance periods can be closely optimised, to give increased long-term efficiency and reductions in maintenance costs.

According to Jotun "Futura AS" offers excellent adhesion to a well prepared substrate, and gives lasting protection against water, solvents and most chemicals. It also has good resistance to abrasion and is ideal as a topcoat for heavy-duty epoxy and epoxymastic coatings. It is available in Multicolour Industry 1, 2 and 3 (chromate free) colours, and there are a number of marine standard colours available to special order.
