Surface tolerant Kemira system for Yanley Lane Viaduct redecoration

Keywords Blasting, Epoxy coatings, Kemira, Primer

Surface tolerant Kemira heavy duty coatings were chosen to redecorate and protect the Yanley Lane Viaduct in Bristol. Some 30 years old, this carries the Long Ashton bypass (the A370) across a road, the main railway line and some fields. Its 12 spans have a total length of approximately 300 metres and a painted surface area of about 12,500 square metres.

The structure was first patch primed with Temabond ST 200, a two component high solids surface tolerant epoxy aluminium primer. This was followed by a full coat of Temabond ST 400, a two component high solids surface tolerant micaceous iron ore coating containing zinc phosphate.

Both are widely used for upgrading a system from conventional to epoxy, vinyl or chlorinated rubber. They are suitable for blast cleaned or hand prepared steel, and can overlap aged chlorinated rubber or conventional paints. Both are said to possess good chemical and solvent resistance with high film build from brush or spray.

Temabond ST 400 is thought to be ideal where a one-coat maintenance system is required, and with Temabond ST 200 forms a high performance two-coat system. At Bristol, an additional coating was given of Temashield EPB 113, a two component epoxy with selected micaceous iron ore. Excellent for onshore or offshore use, this gives an attractive matt finish in silver grey. EPA compliant 1996, and with outstanding anti-abrasion, toughness, durability and weathering characteristics, it conforms to BS 5493 in both content and performance.

"Redecorating a structure of the magnitude and complexity of Yanley Viaduct presents a variety of problems", said Phil Jones of industrial painting contractors Ian Williams Ltd of Cardiff, who carried out the redecoration for North Somerset Council. "This requires a paint system which is both robust and versatile. The exceptional surface tolerance was therefore the key reason for choosing this particular Kemira system".
