Bayer invests in isocyanate production

Bayer, the international research-based group with UK and Ireland headquarters in Newbury, has announced an expansion in capacity for HDl (hexamethylene diisocyanate) production.

This is to satisfy increasing demand for HDI and its downstream products sold by Bayer as Desmodur® for use in polyurethane coatings in automotive and outdoor applications such as corrosion and structural protection.

The existing HDI manufacturing plants in Europe and North America are being expanded to increase annual capacities by 30,000 tonnes. In addition, a plant using state-of-the-art Bayer technology for the production of aliphatic polyisocyanates is to be built in Asia. Planning is already underway.

High weather stability, resistance to chemicals including the components of acid rain and mechanical strength are the typical properties of aliphatic polyurethane coatings. This is why these systems, based on Desmodur N, are also used successfully in vehicle repair, automotive OEM and plastics coatings.
