A 1.4km line of 3.3 × 2.4m precast concrete box culverts is being constructed at Derby for Severn Trent Water to form a new storm drain. This will take exceptional storm flows to the River Derwent at Alvaston, Derby, as well as improving safety by enclosing an existing channel and helping to eliminate smells.

The contractors for the project are McLoughlin Pipelines Ltd and the consultants are Haswell Consulting Engineers. The consultants approved the use of Winn & Coales Tokstrip as the jointing sealant between F C Precast Concrete's box culverts, being familiar with its capabilities on previous contracts.

The new Southern Surface Water Sewer is part of Severn Trent Water's Derby Sewerage Improvement Strategy, which has a main objective of reducing the risk of flooding, from which the Derby area has long been susceptible.

Tokstrip is widely used in the UK and overseas for sealing the joints of precast concrete sectional units in drainage and sewerage construction. Under compression it deforms through the joints to provide a flexible watertight seal. Tests supervised by the Building Research Station have shown that Tokstrip ogee pipe joints can withstand an internal hydrostatic pressure of 2.5 bar (37psi) and retain a seal under shear loading, angular deflection and straight draw.
