Protection for Forth Road Bridge piers

Keywords Winn & Coales, Coatings

Winn & Coales also informs us that its Denso ST Epoxy Mastic coating has been chosen by Forth Road Bridge Joint Board to protect one of the demag expansion joints at the South Tower. This follows its recent use on one of the demag joints under the bridge deck.

This is part of a planned inspection programme which identified the need to renew protection in several areas which had previously been protected with a phenolic resin-based coating. As access to the expansion joints underneath both the bridge deck and the main bridge piers is difficult, as is also construction of the staging, the Forth Road Bridge Joint Board has required a coating system that would withstand the corrosive marine environment for at least ten years. Hence the choice of Denso ST Epoxy Mastic.

Following shotblasting under enclosed conditions to the Swedish SA22 standard, the Denso ST coating was spray applied.

According to Winn & Coales the exceptional adhesion properties of Denso ST Epoxy Mastic are designed for surfaces which have been hydrojetted or power tool prepared. It also claims excellent wetting and deep penetration properties, and can be spray or brush applied.
