Who's playing Monopoly?

Keyword Plimsoll

The major players in the metal treatments industry are, like the winner of a monopoly game, grabbing 79 per cent of the market. This is according to Jennifer D. Ovington in the first ever listing of the Top 100 companies by sales in the recently published Plimsoll Portfolio Analysis: Metal Treatments, 1st Edition 2000.

This élite band is competing for pieces of the industry. For the other companies, staying in the game is going to prove difficult. Only 12 companies have kept their same sales ranking from last year, 33 have moved up and 49 have fallen down. If, like the game, there are only so many properties or companies, a strategy is vital to keep your place at the table.

Take for instance Wilson Walton Group Ltd (The) currently ranked no. 20 in latest sales, up three places from last year. If they want to continue their rise up the ranking and move a further three places again, they will need to find an extra £2 million sales or a growth rate of 8 per cent. This might be done organically, or through acquisition of any company with £2 million sales.

Like monopoly does this mean the number of major players will gradually reduce to only one winner? Jennifer does see further consolidation of the major players, if only because 11 of the players are currently loss making, and remarkably 36 are showing signs of future troubles ahead.

Don Turkington, managing director of Plimsoll Publishing, "Simply going around and around the board is not an option. The nature of the game is that the other players won't just let you win. Innovative thinking is the key!"

The Plimsoll "major players" pack gives you the options not only on the major players but also in great detail on the other 1,070 companies in the metal treatments industry. Who will be the future major players and sadly who might next year disappear? Use the book and build on it, compiling a profile of the major players from your own point of view.

The "pack" contains an individual profile of every UK Metal Treatments company, an electronic version for PC analysis and also pages of comparative analysis, including detailed analysis of the major players.
