Seam-welded tube manufacturing mill

Keywords Kanthal Machinery, Tubing, Welding

Kanthal Machinery, a subsidiary of heating element specialist Kanthal AB, has developed the size manufacturing capability of its Kanthal KOW tube welding mill and is targeting users of small diameter, seam-welded stainless steel, mild steel, incoloy and titanium tubes.

Designated Kanthal KOW-1, the new mill (Plate 2) has a manufacturing size range from 5mm up to 30mm outside diameter and 0.3mm up to 1.5mm thickness. Cut lengths up to 6 metres can be produced and all tube ends are said to be calibrated and deburred automatically. Close manufacturing tolerances of +/- 0.04mm can reportedly be achieved with production speeds of up to 20 metres per minute. Tubes are stated to be produced fully to ASTM standards.

According to Kanthal the same advanced and reliable TIG welding and processing technology which it builds into its tube welding mills for the manufacture of tubular heating elements is now available to producers of heat exchangers, tubes for the automotive industry and mechanical components such as furniture or bicycle frames.

Key features claimed of the Kanthal KOW-1 are its fast operation and the high quality of tubes produced. In-line non-destructive testing is standard. Tube size changes can be effected quickly and easily and Kanthal Machinery can supply specific roll sets to accommodate particular outside diameters and wall thicknesses.
