Nickel coated wire

Keywords Sandvik Steel, Wire, Springs

Sandvik Steel has launched a new nickel coated spring wire, designated gusab Nicoat "A".

The new wire has been specially developed and is aimed particularly at the spring wire and electronic industries in the USA, Europe and South East Asia, where it is expected to be very competitive.

Nickel coated wire claims advantages in high speed coiling and reportedly gives a better yield in the production of springs compared to non-nickel coated wires. Its key benefits are said to be easier and more even coiling, less wear on coiling tooling, tempering without degreasing or discoloration and good soldering properties.

gusab Nicoat "A" is available with a coated or alternatively a bright surface finish.

The coated surface consists of a lubrication layer which is made up of mainly sodium and calcium compounds and is believed to be almost free from chlorides. Designed to provide high output in the production of springs including those requiring close gauge and spring force tolerances, no additional lubrication is needed to achieve high feed rates.

There is also thought to be less possibility of the wire surface being scratched during coiling, which minimises the risk of fatigue failure. Any coating remaining on the finished spring can be removed using alkaline agents.

Bright drawn wire has its surface covered with a very thin oil film. Lubricant is needed only when coiling springs with a complex design.

Coated wire is available in a size range from 0.22 up to 2.50mm diameter and 0.15 to 0.80mm for bright finish.
