Composite bridge retrofit

Severely corroded and ageing road bridges can be strengthened with carbon composites, according to XXsys Technologies Inc. of San Diego.
The company put the strength of its carbon composite retrofit technologies to a series of full scale destructive tests on a 35-year-old bridge that was about to be removed and replaced along the I-15 corridor in Salt Lake City. The work was done under a subcontract to the University of Utah, which is operating the demonstration project with support from the National Science Foundation of the Federal Highway Administration, and the Department of Transportation (UDoT).
The retrofit work was followed by full-scale destructive tests conducted by university researchers on six columns and two cap beams on the South Temple Street Bridge which had suffered severe corrosion.
