Elcometer Instruments Ltd, the world specialist in instrumentation for the quality control of coating processes, has introduced a novel, new, palm-sized coating thickness gauge to its extensive range of products for testing coatings.

The Elcometer 456, considered by Elcometer to be the best designed instrument of its type to be found anywhere in the world, utilises the well-known measurement techniques of electromagnetic induction and eddy current to measure a wide variety of coatings on either ferrous metal or non-ferrous metal substrates. All the 456 gauges have the new multiple calibration adjustment methods for smooth substrates, rough substrates and unusual metal (special) substrates for optimum measurement accuracy.

Packed with many powerful features and presented in a specially designed, rugged, handheld gauge-case, the Elcometer 456 incorporates a full graphics display offering menu-driven operation which is both easy-to-use and flexible and provides user guidance on the display.

The 456 uses intelligent probes so the gauge can host a wide range of gauge options and scale ranges for ferrous (F), non-ferrous (NF) and dual FNF operation are available. The reading speed of the 456 is thought to be unsurpassed and at >60 readings per minute it is probably the fastest gauge of its type.

The Elcometer 456 is available as either integral or separate probe versions and the separate probe gauges have a new probe format, the Plug In Integral Probe (PINIP™), as an option. The PINIP converts the separate probe gauge to single-handed, integral probe operation for large area surveys.

Basic, Standard and Top feature-options maximise the customer choice from the quick and simple Basic with its simple statistics display, through the single batch memory of the Standard unit (up to 250 readings), to the fully featured Top version with memory for 40,000 readings in up to 999 batches, upper and lower limits and flexible data collection modes, each batch having separate calibration adjustments.
