Plascoat informs us that it is having to revise cost savings projections for its NG30 low density polyethylene (LDPE) following detailed performance reports from early customers.

Plascoat had estimated that manufacturers engaged in the coating of such wirework as refrigerator shelving could make savings of up to 25 per cent over competitive materials. However, actual user reports submitted by two EU and two Eastern European manufacturers are said to show savings are nearer 50 per cent of their coating cost.

According to Plascoat around 30 per cent has been due to the reduced application density of NG30, while the lower energy requirement associated with the application of the coating is equivalent to a further 20 per cent saving on powder cost.

No requirement for a primer and a total elimination of extracted plasticiser fumes resulted in bonuses in terms of environmental and fire directives compliance.

There is said to be no compromising product quality with a switch to NG30. The new formulation claims free flowing properties that allow good edge coverage, with minimal overall coating thickness at considerably lower coating temperatures. The user reports are stated to show an average reduction in pre-heat temperature of 94 deg.C and 40 deg.C post heat.

It is also reported that claims made for the long term adhesion, UV and salt resistance properties of Plascoat's PPA571 thermoplastic construction coating have been upheld in the toughest of ten-year tests in Spain.

Tenth anniversary checks on the supports and tubular structure of the Pasarela Pealonal de Anorga, a 25-metre local authority footbridge over a railway line near the Northern coastal town of San Sebastian reportedly showed the PPA571 coating to be "still perfect".

That assessment by the managing director of specialist coaters Herkide S.A., JuanMarie Lacoste, is stated to be in stark contrast to the previous performance of a polyamide coating on the same bridge. According to the assessment, within months it had begun to peel from the tubular sections.

"We turned to PPA571 for a coating that would accommodate the wide temperature range; provide a high level of resistance; meet the requirements of a tightening budget; and offer a life of more than 10 years," explained Senor Lacoste. "Ten years on I can confirm that it is still perfect."
