Swedes put PPA571 under salt attack to find road culvert coating solution

Thousands of kilometres of steel culverts alongside Scandinavian roads could be given corrosion protection using Plascoat's PPA571 thermoplastic coating following trials carried out by the Swedish Institute for Testing and Research.

Until now no coating protection has been given to the galvanised steel culverts, so vital in draining away melting snow with its high concentration of road salt. The result has been rapid corrosion and the need for expensive replacement of the steel sections, often more than 100cm wide.

The trials carried out to the ASTM A926-94 standard have involved the PPA571-coated samples being bombarded with salt and stone pieces for a million revolutions. It is reported that at the end of that extended punishment more than half of the Plascoat finish still remained to protect the steel.

"We are delighted with the trial performance, which underlines the value of PPA571 in construction applications," says Plascoat marketing director, Patrick Benson. "We are now looking to convert this trial success into orders from countries such as Sweden and Canada."

According to Plascoat it was the performance of PPA571 in the corrosion protection of pipework in the salt-laden glacial clay of Gothenburg, Sweden, that inspired the use of the coating in similar applications in North America – with the Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) among those choosing a new alternative for the longer-term protection of its ductile iron water supply pipes.

The Plascoat material claims long-term adhesion, even in extreme climates, and excellent resistance to UV rays, stress cracking, impact, airborne and water-borne pollutants.
