AK Steel sets second casting world record in a month – Mansfield works sets new mark for stainless casting

AK Steel said that management and temporary replacement employees at its Mansfield (OH) Works have broken their own world record for consecutive heats cast of 409 series stainless steel. In a sequence that began on 28 October 2002, crews at the Mansfield Works cast 32 consecutive heats of stainless steel, surpassing their own record of 28 set in February of 2000.

The sequence was ended after about 44 h for a scheduled grade change. Employees in the shop worked accident-free, without suffering even a first aid injury, during the record-breaking casting run. The Mansfield Works has been operating with temporary replacement employees since September of 1999, due to a labor dispute.

Employees of AK Steel's Ashland (KY) Works broke their own record for sequentially casting carbon steel on 26 September 2002, with 1,851 consecutive heats.

"If world championships were held for steelmaking, AK Steel would be atop the judging stand in virtually every venue," said Richard M. Wardrop, Jr, Chairman, President and CEO of AK Steel. "I am especially proud of Mansfield's performance in light of the harassment and violence our management and replacement workers have endured for more than 3 years during the labor dispute," he said.

During the stainless sequence, the caster produced 267 slabs, weighing more than 4,300 tons in total during the record run. The shop made 15 slab width changes during the sequence. The Mansfield Works produces stainless steels primarily used in automotive exhaust system components.
