Countdown to completion: Akzo Nobel is helping to prepare the main venue for this year's Olympic Games, being held in Greece
Products supplied by the company's International Protective Coatings business have been used on the roof of the Olympic Stadium in Athens, which is currently being put in place as part of the historic stadium's modernization.
The roof, which has a total surface area of 65,000 m2, consists of two giant arcs at either end of the venue, each with a span of 304 m and a height of 80 m.
These arcs will provide support for the cables holding the plexiglass panels which make up the roof itself. The panels, which cover 95 percent of the seats, will help to reflect sunlight, an important function considering temperatures in Athens can reach 40°C during the summer.
A special anti-corrosive system was selected for the new roof, which includes Intercure® 200 and 420, Interplate® 855, Interplus® 256 and Interthane® 990.
The 16,000 ton, GBP 80 million glass and steel dome over the main stadium – which seats nearly 75,000 people – was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
The Games themselves, the second of the modern era to be staged in Greece following the 1896 event in Athens – will be held from 13 to 29 August.
