The ASM Heat Treating Society held its very successful bi-annual Conference and Exposition at the end of 2005 in Pittsburgh, PA. Attendees were treated to an exceptional technical program and the largest heat-treating exposition in North America. Nearly 200 companies exhibited on the exposition floor, showing the latest and most advanced equipment available to the industry. The technical program kept attendees informed on the latest technologies shaping the heat treating industry through the presentation of 110 papers on a variety of topics.

The highlight of the technical program was the Dr Edenhofer Symposium, named in honor of Bernd Edenhofer, FASM, FIFHTSE, Technical Managing Director of Ipsen International. Opened by Heat Treating Society immediate Past President Robert Gaster, who called on Ipsen's Mario Ciampini to introduce Edenhofer, the plenary session of the symposium was attended by 125 people. Those present heard Edenhofer deliver an informative paper on the Evolution of the Gaseous Nitriding Process Throughout the Decades.

The ASM Heat Treating Society held its annual board meeting during the event, at which the president's gavel was passed from Robert Gaster (John Deere Technology center) to William Bernard (Surface Combustion), who will serve a two-year term. New board members Rick Sisson, FASM, Vice President (Worcester Polytechnic Institute), Roger Jones (Solar Atmospheres), and D. Scott MacKenzie (Houghton International) were welcomed at the meeting.

The society's general membership meeting was held on the exposition floor and conducted by HTS President William Bernard. The highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the George H. Bodeen Award, named for the retired Chairman of Lindberg Corporation. This year's recipient of the award was William Jones, FASM, CEO of Solar Atmospheres Inc., who received the award for “the development of vacuum furnace technology and processing through innovative engineering design and the successful advancement of quality heat treating services for the metals industry”. President Bernard also honored conference Co-chairs Robert A. Hill (Solar Atmospheres) and Daniel H. Herring (The Herring Group) for their fine work and untiring efforts in support of the event.

ASM International honored another heat treating leader at its annual award banquet. The designation of ASM Distinguished Life Member was awarded to John D. Hubbard, CEO of Bodycote International, Wilmslow, England.
