Hull is just the “plaice” for modern art

Hull-based Humber Galvanizing Ltd has proved it is just the “plaice” for artists when it comes to protecting modern sculptures from the elements.

The company, of Citadel Trading Park, was asked to galvanize a steel plaque featuring a recipe for grilled plaice by Hull sculptor Russ Coleman (Figure 3). The plaque is a “test-piece” for a series of new sculptures at Littlehampton, Sussex, to commemorate the south-coast town's fishing heritage.

Russ Coleman said: “Each plaque will be the centre-piece inside an oyster design. I have developed the technique of laser-cutting the letters from steel and then welding them together. I use galvanizing for quite a lot of my work and I have sent quite a few items to Humber Galvanizing Ltd in the past”.

Several artists around the UK will be combining to produce the finished work for Littlehampton, which is due to be installed later this year.

Tony Linsley of Humber Galvanizing Ltd said: “This is one of the more unusual requests for galvanizing which we have carried out, but galvanizing provides the ideal anti-corrosion protection for steel and other metals which are exposed to harsh outdoor weather and environmental conditions for many years”.
