Mavic, the iconic French manufacturer of high performance road and mountain bike systems, has launched a new surface treatment available on four of their premier 2011 Road Wheels. The treatment, branded “Exalith”, is supplied to Mavic exclusively by Keronite International Limited from their facilities in the UK and is the result of a number of years of collaboration between the two companies. The Exalith product offers enhanced wear and braking performance and provides a black surface to the rim which will last the lifetime of the wheel. The degree of control in the process and the wear resistant nature of the surface have enabled Mavic to shave 10 g off the same wheels treated using conventional means whilst enhancing the performance, life and looks of the end-product.

The Keronite system is based on the patented Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation technology – an electrochemical surface conversion treatment which can be applied to aluminium, magnesium and titanium. Keronite offers a “Clean Tech” process which delivers high performance surface characteristics in a wide range of challenging applications without the use of heavy metals or aggressive acids at any stage of the treatment and can offer specific solutions to enable customers to obtain unique product performance.

Sean Sullivan, Mavic’s US Marketing Manager, said “The Exalith surface treatment process creates a highly wear-resistant, corrosion resistant finish. The process penetrates into the rim to about 10 microns and is so hard that even under long-term braking; riders will never wear down the surface like on a regular rim.”

Mavic have been wheel sponsors of the Garmin-Transitions ProTour team since the start of 2010 and the first fruits of that partnership are now emerging in the form of several new products for 2011. As part of their new two-year sponsorship deal, the Garmin-Transitions ProTour team have helped test and develop new wheel systems for Mavic including the Exalith range of wheels. “Mavic are committed to providing our riders with the best technology possible,” said Jonathan Vaughters, CEO of Garmin-Transitions. “This partnership is all about technology, and Mavic have worked closely with our riders, mechanics and staff to develop the best possible wheel systems.”

David Lewis, Keronite’s Director of sales, said “This is an exciting project for Keronite and the culmination of a number of years of intense work, development and testing between Keronite and Mavic to develop a durable high performance black surface that not only looks great but outperforms regular rims. I’m sure this is just the start for our black treatment.” Keronite is already working with a number of other bike component manufactures to explore the use of Keronite on other parts of the bike.
