Upgraded Rolls-Royce engines
Upgraded Rolls-Royce engines
Cathay Pacific has signed an agreement with engine supplier Rolls-Royce plc to convert the airline's existing RB211-524G and H engines to a new standard. The new engine standard, known as the RB211-524G/H-T, will deliver higher performance and better fuel economy for the airline's fleet of 19 passenger and two freighter Boeing 747-400s.
The conversion involves upgrading the RB211-524 high pressure (HP) system to match the system in the Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engine. This provides a number of advantages, including better fuel economy, improved engine performance, weight reduction and lower maintenance costs.
The conversion of Cathay Pacific's 92 RB211-524G/H engines began in March 1998 and will be completed by 2002. During the duration of the conversion programme, the converted engines can be combined with the standard engines on the wing, so Cathay Pacific can begin to enjoy the benefits of each engine as it is modified.
