Racal-MESL has been selected by Italtel, the Italian defence and communications company, to supply sub-system "super-components" for the MIDS (Multi-function Information Distribution System) terminal.

MIDS is the next generation of class 2 JTIDS (Joint Tactical Information Distribution System) terminal and continues to utilise Link-16 digital information exchange protocol to provide communication and situational awareness to air and ground units. The system has been developed as part of a multi-national co-operative programme by the USA, France, Germany, Italy and Spain and will initially be used by Eurofighters and F-18s. Following completion of the pre-production phase, Racal-MESL expects to commence production in 1999 of hundreds of units per year for up to ten years.

The super-component integrates two independent functions within the equipment amplification and filtering. By integrating these filters with an amplifier in a single sealed package, the overall system performance is optimised within the minimal space available. MIDS terminals are smaller and lighter than JTIDS and are readily reconfigurable to meet specific user needs.
