In British patent 2302 318 Bodenseewerk Gerätetechnik GmbH describe a landing procedure for aircraft, in particular unmanned aircraft which are equipped with a flight guidance system, an image resolving sensor and an image processing system. The procedure includes the steps of :

(1) marking a landing field with marks (e.g. infrared emitters, such as heated plates) which can be recognized by the sensor, in well-defined positions;

(2) determining the position of these marks in the field of view detected by the sensor;

(3) determining approach parameters by means of the image processing system from the positions of the marks in the field of view; and

(4) applying the approach parameters thus determined to the flight guidance system guiding the aircraft to land on the landing field.
