Launched at MACH '98, the SMS µScan is a portable, non-contact surface measurement instrument which uses scattered laser light to determine surface roughness with high precision. From a single measurement the µScan can provide RMS surface roughness, reflectance and scattered light level (BRDF) on flat or curved surfaces under any lighting conditions.

The SMS µScan System consists of a hand-held control unit (CU) with key buttons and LCD display, an interchangeable measuring head with laser detectors and a separate charging unit. Measurements, reportedly, take less than five seconds and could not be simpler to use ­ the measurement head is placed on the objective area, a button pressed and the results are clearly displayed and stored in the system memory. A total of 700 measurements can be stored in 255 files and the µScan provides the capability to program pass/fail criteria and software is available for control, analysis and file conversion.

The easy, simple operation and the robust design allows the product to be used in particularly hard industrial environments for quality and routine measurements. Its applications include optical surfaces, semiconductor wafers, magnetic storage media, precision machined surfaces, cosmetic finishes, rolled and formed surfaces.
