ESDU Data Item estimates fin effect on base drag at supersonic speeds

Keywords Drag, ESDU, Estimation

ESDU International has released a new Data Item that estimates the effect of stabilising fins on the (jet-off) base drag of cylindrical bodies travelling at supersonic speeds.

Primarily designed for use by aeronautical engineers working on the design of air and surface launched missiles and rockets, the new Data Item (97022) is based on a simple theoretical model modified by an empirical factor to fit wind-tunnel test data.

The method of calculation used in the Data Item has been derived, principally, for cylindrical bodies with either cruciform or planar fins, with trailing edges located flush with or upstream of the base.

Equations are presented in a generalised form to allow estimates to be made for bodies in combination with up to six equally spaced fins. The method requires there to be sufficient length of body upstream of the fins, forbody/fin interference to be negligible.
