Digimatic indicator with absolute feature

Keywords Measurement, Mitutoyo

A new IDU ABS Digimatic indicator is being introduced by Mitutoyo that incorporates the innovative ABSolute technology to eliminate the need to zero the instrument every time it is switched on. With a full 25mm/1in. of travel, this unit will, it is claimed, prove ideal for quality control and inspection roles.

During the set-up procedure, users can select metric or imperial units, the origin can be set, and the positive/negative direction can be changed. This last feature allows more meaningful results to be obtained when inspecting parts against dimensions on a drawing. When SPC (statistical process control) regimes are in operation, the IDU ABS indicator can be fitted with the optional SPC lead to allow data to be collected automatically.

A stem diameter of 3/8in. provides a stable clamping surface when the indicator is used with a stand, such as the Mitutoyo 7003 dial gauge stand, or the instrument can be built into a dedicated fixture. A particularly slim body (23 × 38 × 126mm) allows the indicator to be easily incorporated within compact fixturing.

Mitutoyo's ABSolute measurement technology is said to be becoming increasingly popular among engineers and metrologists who appreciate the benefits to be gained by not having to set the origin each time the instrument is switched on. The scope for errors is thought to be greatly reduced, giving increased confidence in the measurements obtained. To complement the ABSolute technology, the IDU ABS indicator has a large, clear LCD with a resolution of 0.01 mm/0.005in. Accuracy is 0.02mm over the full measurement range of 25mm/1in. A hardened ball is set in the spindle tip and the measurement force is 1.8N.

As with all of Mitutoyo's inspection instruments, the IDU ABS indicator comes with a full 12-month guarantee and can be supplied with a calibration certificate, traceable to national standards, if required.
