Ultra-lightweight, high-temperature porous titanium structures for defence and commercial applications are said to be under development by Ashurst Government Services Division, Ashurst Technology Ltd, Baltimore, Maryland, and United Technologies Research Centre, East Hartford, Connecticut, as part of a US government-sponsored programme.

Porous titanium will be evaluated for aerospace applications such as ultra-lightweight structures and high-temperature sound, and vibration-damping systems. Potential commercial applications include sports equipment and medical prostheses.

Ashurst has already developed a low-cost, near net-shape casting process to fabricate porous titanium alloys. According to the company, the proprietary ingot metallurgy process allows introduction of controlled porosity, which reduces density while retaining mechanical and physical properties.
