Bernard Ziegler, Airbus Industrie's retired senior vice-president engineering, has received the Flight Safety Foundation President's Citation for "truly outstanding service on behalf of safety, whether it is valour, professionalism, or service above and beyond normal expectations." Mr Ziegler joined Airbus lndustrie in 1970 as a test pilot and, in the course of his career piloted the first flight of four aircraft types, including the A300, A310, A320 and A340-200. The honour focused on his role in the development of Airbus Industrie's innovative fly-by-wire flight deck software that allows pilots to apply the maximum control forces considered necessary while keeping the aircraft inside the margin of safe operation during flight manoeuvres. He retired in January 1997.

Airbus Industrie chief executive officer, Noel Forgeard, has appointed Horst Emker to the position of senior vice president programmes, replacing Dietrich Knospe, who is retiring. In this position Mr Emker is responsible for the evolution of Airbus Industrie aircraft programmes and overseeing customer order fulfillment from technical definition to final delivery of the aircraft. Mr Knospe is retiring after 28 years of distinguished service with Airbus Industrie. He joined Airbus Industrie as a flight test engineer and has held various positions related to certification, airworthiness and transport. He was appointed senior vice president programmes and processes in June 1996.
