BARCO Display Systems has been selected by The Boeing Company, Monrovia, California, to supply a first series of Avionics Colour Head Down Displays (CHDD) for the Boeing NightHawk Targeting System being installed on the Eurocopter B0-105 helicopter.

BARCO's Colour Head Down Display CHDD 5.4 is a 5 × 4 inch avionics colour display, with a resolution of 640 × 480, and using state-of-the-art AMLCD (Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display) technology. This technology is said to ensure that the BARCO cockpit display has superior optical performance in terms of luminance, contrast, and reflectivity (Plate 2).

Plate 2 Barco's colour head down display CHDD 5.4 is a 5 * inch avionics colour display, with a resolution of 640 * 480 and using stateof the art AMLCD technology. It has been designed for avionics applications

BARCO's CHDD 5.4 consists of a high quality, full sunlight legible, Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS-A) or Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compliant, raster scan flat panel display and a multi-function bezel assembly. It has especially been designed for avionics applications, and is fully compliant with MIL-L-85762A with regards to luminance, contrast and NVIS radiance.

The CHDD 5.4 provides over 200fL of flat field white luminance and utilizes the latest technologies in optical contrast enhancement and reflection reduction techniques for superior viewing in direct sunlight. On the opposite end of the scale, the CHDD 5.4 provides >4000:1 dimming. For night operations, it provides an extremely low monochrome field luminance as low as <0.03 fL.

The Boeing Company selected BARCO's CHDD 5.4 to provide dynamic, high resolution display of the NightHawk's State of the Art FLIR and TV sensor imagery. The Combination of NightHawk's high performance sensors and the BARCO high resolution display will provide superior day/night/ adverse weather long target detection and recognition capability for B0-105 operators. Delivery of a first series of displays started in March 1999.
