Indentec's calibration laboratory in Stourbridge has been accredited by UKAS for the verification of Vickers hardness-testing machines and the calibration of Vickers test blocks to the new International and European standard BSENISO 6507: 1998.

The accreditation ­ one of the first in the UK ­ was effective from 1 January 1999, when the new standard started to replace the previous national standard BS427: 1990.

It is now a UKAS requirement that all new and reconditioned Vickers machines must be directly verified to the new standard using load cells and stage micrometers, in addition to indirect verification with test blocks. Existing indenters and test blocks must also be recertified to the new international and European standard.

Indentec's accreditation covers the direct and indirect verification of testing and calibrating machines for macro, low-load and micro Vickers scales. It also extends to the calibration of test blocks on a hardness-testing machine specially designed and constructed to ensure compliance with exacting requirements on repeatable accuracy.

The machine is an upgraded version of the most advanced digital touchscreen-controlled model in the company's standard Vickers range. It is supported by customized software to ensure all calibrations are carried out to the requisite standards.

This is the second success of this kind for the hardness-testing specialist. In 1997, Indentec was the first to secure official accreditation to the then new Euronorm standard on Rockwell hardness.
