Heidenhain reports that users of its TNC contouring control systems can now make productivity gains from faster and simplified setting with the introduction of touch probe packages that are easily and cost-effectively retrofitted to the machine tool and control system (Plate 7).

Now available through Heidenhain (GB), the new TS 3-D touch probe and TT 3-D tool setting probe packages include full installation and operator training for TNC systems that incorporate touch probe cycle software in their specification.

The TS 3-D touch probes are rugged and can measure components and features under program control between individual machining cycles allowing adjustment to be made for factors such as tool wear. The probe system, which uses a patented contact-free optical switch as its sensor for wear-free and long term stability, will also capture workpiece datums at corners and circle centres and provide automatic compensation for any misalignment of the workpiece.

Heidenhain's TT 3-D tool measuring probes can be used to measure spindle mounted tools for length and diameter which also includes individual teeth during the machining cycle. The results obtained can either be used to automatically update the offsets in the tool table of the TNC control for subsequent machining or to invoke selection of a sister tool if weak or breakage tolerances are exceeded. These features significantly enhance the capability for unattended machine operation.
