Gordon McShannon, former president of the Federation of British Engineers' Tool Manufacturers and chief executive of the Hydra Tools International Group, has been elected as the first ever British president of ECTA, the European Cutting Tools Association.

ECTA represents the interests and activities of the national tooling associations of nine European countries. It also has a close working relationship with the United States Cutting Tool Institute (USCTI). In addition to its normal association role, it also works closely on the development of standards, new technology and environmental issues.
