This important textbook opens with the basic topics of Hydrocarbon Chemistry, Engineering Thermodynamics and Combustion Principles. It then covers:

  • Conventional fuels: gases; petroleum-derived gasolines, kerosines, gas oils, diesel fuels and fuel oils; coal; high-performance reactants for ramjets and rockets.

  • Combustion performance: normal and abnormal; additives; emissions.

  • Alternative fuels: supplemental from gases and coal; substitutes including oxygenates, nitrogen compounds, hydrogen, biofuels.

Development and forecasting are incorporated under the following subtitles: Fuels, this section examines types of fuel, their production, properties, testing, handling, performance and emission control. Propulsion discusses the following, propulsion methods, steam, spark-ignition engine, gas turbine, ramjet, rocket, fuel cell and electrical/solar. The last section deals with applications, these include ramwings and aerospace.
