Maintenance, repair and overhaul: the next opportunity for competitive advantage

Keywords Maintenance, Information technology, Druid

Companies are already reaping the benefits of their investment in enterprise resource planning (ERP) IT systems, and now they are looking for the next area of competitive advantage. This is emerging for many in the form of extending their ERP investment into the heart of their maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) activities. So what is MRO and how can companies benefit from it? MRO encompasses all of the processes that surround the effective maintenance, repair and overhaul of high value physical assets, including aircraft, transport systems, oil rigs and submarines. Management consultancy Druid has produced a white paper called "Maintenance repair overhaul: the next opportunity for competitive advantage", which takes a look at how organizations can extend the benefits of ERP into MRO.

The paper begins by explaining what exactly is meant by NIRO. For some organisations, MRO is a core internal activity, while for others it is a key customer service. Either way, if businesses can manage MRO more quickly and efficiently, then there is a direct contribution to the bottom line.
