Following the review of activities described in Vol. 72 No. 3 of this journal, the main event has been a very successful presence at Farnborough International, 24 to 30 July this year.

According to the Society of British Aerospace Companies, this was the most successful event of its kind up to now. Full details can be found in SBAC News on www.sbac.co.uk There were 170,000 trade and 133,000 public visitors.

Orders placed reached $52 billion of which the UK share was $6.75 billion (12.9 percent) and the AAU aims to help the UK aerospace industry to steadily increase this proportion beyond the 18 percent held previously in the early 1980s.

The AAU stand at Farnborough was in a very good position in Hall Number One, being adjacent to the stands of the Association of Colleges of Aerospace Technology and that of the SBAC/RAeSoc "Careers in Aerospace". The accompanying photographs show:

Plate 2 shows the stand with university representatives and Terry Savage, editor of AEAT, who was present for most of the time. MCB managing editor, Mae Park, was present on 26 September.

The visit of The Rt Hon. Geoffrey Hoon, Minister of Defence, together with David Marshall talking with Dr John Barnes, President of ACAT and AAU (Plate 3). The formidable responsibilities of aerospace engineers was brought to light that afternoon with the tragic Concorde accident in France.

The Merlin Products engineering flight simulator on the SBAC "Careers in Aerospace" stand (Plate 4), which was kindly lent by Coventry University through the auspices of the AAU Flight Simulator Group of the AAU and Professor Edward Smith, Dean of Engineering.
