Keywords: IFR Systems, Testing

With the variety and number of TETRA terminals starting to ram up, IFR Systems, Inc. has launched an enhanced version of its 2968 TETRA Radio Test Set which it believes makes TETRA terminal testing even easier, faster and yet more comprehensive.

The enhanced 2968 TETRA Radio Test Set includes a suite of automatic test programs which are said to be very simple to run, and give users full flexibility to tailor test applications to their own specific requirements. The enhanced Test Set is stated to be fully compliant with TIPv2 (TETRA Interoperability Profile-version 2), which ensures that it will be compatible with the wide range of TETRA terminals now being developed.

Due to the wide scope/flexibility of the general ETSI TETRA specifications, all major TETRA equipment manufacturers have been working together at the TETRA interoperability trials, at Tele Danmark in Copenhagen, to ensure commonality of operation and implementation. IFR informs us that it is the only test and measurement company to be a full-time member of the interoperability project and IFR 2968s feature prominently in the interoperability trials.

The enhanced 2968 TETRA Radio Test Set claims a number of advanced benefits. Cell reselection and call restoration (undeclared, unannounced, announced type 3 and 2) are supported for true inter-cell handover testing along with open loop and closed loop power control. Group attachment, detachment and selection is supported, selected and attached GSSI are displayed and mobile originated STATUS or SDS (Short Data Service) messages are acknowledged and displayed. Transmission trunked call is supported, and the traffic channel can be on a different frequency from the control channel. The MMI has been refined to make it easier to read and configure.

Additional features claimed include:

  • Neighbour cell broadcast (with configuration of channel number, ID. fast and slow threshold and hysteresis, broadcast interval and Location Area (LA).

  • Type of location update displayed (ITSI Attach, Roaming, etc.).

  • ESN (External Subscriber Number) i.e. dialled telephone number displayed for mobile-originated telephone call.

  • Calling party identity (SSI) sent for mobile-terminated call.

  • Mobile terminated call can be cancelled from 2968 during alerting.

Existing users of 2968 TETRA Radio Test Sets can upgrade to the new version under a special IFR upgrade programme.
