Howmet Castings, an Alcoa business, recently announced that its effort to supply titanium castings for the F-22 had won a "superior performance award" from Boeing.

According to Robert D. Barnes, vice-president in charge of the F-22 program at Boeing, Howmet achieved "sustained superior schedule performance throughout 1999 and 2000. Howmet Structural Castings' dedication to improving quality and reducing flow times through continual production innovations has resulted in schedule performance that has ensured on-time fabrication, assembly and delivery of the F-22 wings".

"Since partnering with the Boeing Company, Howmet has developed and productionized investment cast structural titanium components for use in more than a dozen applications, many of them fracture critical", says Michael Darrah, general manager of the Howmet Hampton Structural Castings facility, which supplies F-22 structural components to Boeing.
