Dunlop Precision Rubber reports that it has won its first contracts to supply aerospace seals for Bombardier's all-new Continental™ business jet, currently under development by an international team of aircraft design companies (Plate 7).
Dunlop will manufacture fire-retardant fabric reinforced silicone seals for the nacelles of the twin Honeywell AS907 high bypass ratio turbofan engines that will power the aircraft. The nacelles are being built in the UK by GKN Westland Aerospace, on the Isle of Wight. The AS907 engine is entirely new and will offer 6,500 pounds of thrust (28.9kN), flat rated to ISA+15°C.
Plate 7 Wing mating in progress on the first Bombardier Continental business jet, for which Dunlop Precision is manufacturing a range of elastomeric seals, including fire-retardant silicone seals for the nacelles
Dunlop Precision will also manufacture elastomeric seals for the aircraft's baggage door. These are being supplied to the Aerospace Industry Development Corporation (AIDC) of Taiwan, and are under construction.
Officially launched at the Paris Air Show 1999, the Continental's first flight is expected to be in mid-2001, with type certification and customer deliveries in 2002.
