5-axis horizontal machining centre for turbine blade production
Keywords: Machining, Turbines, Tooling
The Japanese machine tool builder, Okuma & Howa, has introduced a version of its MM-300TB horizontal-spindle machining centre configured for profile milling turbine blades from the solid, says UK agent, NCMT. It uses simultaneous interpolation of all five CNC axes and may be supplied with a gantry loader for high volume production (Plate 7).

Such a machine was exhibited at EMO 2001, equipped with the necessary high precision contouring control and a Fanuc data server for drip feeding the large program to the control.
Working area of the machine is 450mm x 280mm x 365mm. Swing capacity on the A-axis is 160mm diameter and maximum cutting length is 300mm, defining the size of blade that may be produced. The B-axis provides ± 30 degrees of tilt, more than sufficient for the application.
A 5.517.5kW spindle motor delivers speeds in the range 100 – 10,000rpm. Spindle taper is No 40 and the preferred toolholding system is the.BIG Plus (also marketed in the UK by NCMT), featuring face and taper contact for high rigidity and precision. Tool magazine capacity is 40.1
