European engineering society launches forum for human factors community

A new global Professional Network (PN), aimed at supporting professionals working in all aspects of human factors engineering and ergonomics, was recently launched by the institution of electrical engineers (IEE), Europe’s largest professional engineering organisation.

The PN, “Human Factors Engineering” was inaugurated at the IEE, Savoy Place, London at a lecture on “Human factors and reliability – making a difference?” given by Dr. Barry Kirwan from Eurocontrol Experimental Centre in France. The PN was launched by Professor Brian Mellitt, president of the IEE and Magdalen Galley, president of the Ergonomics Society.

Operating primarily via an on-line forum, the PN offers access to global industry news, training resources, technical articles, discussion boards, links to other useful sites as well as a comprehensive jobs database. The electronic forum will be a valuable resource for professionals seeking information and assistance and the means to share knowledge and experience with others within the industry.

The network is supported by an international team of leading industrial practitioners and academic researchers providing an authoritative and impartial source of information.

“The multi-disciplinary nature of our community and rapid advances in technology have all strengthened the need for improved relevant, information sharing”, says Dr. Cari Sandom, Chairman of the PN. “The network will bring together professionals with an interest in the engineering of systems with a human element and aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and ideas amongst the Human Factors, Ergonomics and Engineering communities on a global basis.” “In particular, we welcome the opportunity to further links with the Ergonomics Society and work more closely with its members.”
